As a child, God drew me to Himself and pointed to a foggy place I knew as the mission field. I did not know the details but I knew the one pointing the way. As a young mom, God showed me a starting line for international missions on a SAMS short-term mission in Honduras. God made a way for more short-term missions to Honduras, Mexico, Trinidad and Belize. Then in 2006 God sent Chuck and I to go to Uganda. Since then, as a SAMS missionary bridger, with the support of family and friends,I have returned to Uganda and Kenya many times.
Looking back a few years, here on the home front, Chuck and I were preparing for his retirement and the sale of our Oakdale home. We were creating a homestead, building a cabin, chopping wood for the wood cook stove, developing a solar system with propane generator backup. A septic system was installed and large water tanks were put in place to hold the spring water. The spring was cleaned and brought up to good working standard. A wood shed became the hen pen. Soon a furnace and cistern will be added.
We continue to fully enjoy visiting our four grandchildren and one more due to join the family in December. Chickens, ducks, bees and Tucker our dog round out our small farm in West Virginia. We are meeting new friends in our small town and have even met a few new friends a bit further out of town. In the midst of all this, and with the help of a list of people a mile long, I finally graduated (again) from Trinity School for Ministry. My thesis is complete, now I pray to use what I have learned to bless others.

God answers prayers in His own good time and that time is now. Now is the time to renew, expand and refocus the partnership with friends in Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan. I look forward to meet with many friends and partners this week during the missions conferences in North Carolina. The vision God has given is one of international friends working together to train children's ministry leaders, working together to learn from one another. We look forward to a short-term mission in the new year.

Ministry work on the home front continues with asking questions of the local people of Belington about how to best serve them. When we first arrived here, we noticed a small country market at the entrance to the neighborhood. It close a few years ago and has been sitting vacant. I believe that God is calling us to take back this land, this neighborhood, these beautiful people; away from the enemy and back into the Kingdom of God. Next steps include gathering the local pastors and community leaders for a time of prayer, together asking God how we can work to bless the people here.

Ministry will also continue a bit further out, in 3 nearby towns and Chuck and I go to meet the international students nearby. We hope to host them in our home for a meal, some fun and time to talk about their homes. This work is encouraged and supported by like-minded people who are forming Anglican International student support group through Anglican Global Mission Partners (AGMP). It is also a SAMS approved project.

The long vision, the picture God gave to me years ago, is to host friends from all over the world who come for weeks or months to rest, refresh and renew their call to serve wherever God sends them. It is a dream that seems impossible at the moment but if it is of God, He will see it through. In the mean time, you are welcome!!!

At the Ascension, "they asked Jesus, "Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom of Israel?" He said to them, "It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight." (Acts 1:6-10).

Please pray for us and our partners in Jerusalem (Belington), Judea (local colleges) and Samaria (friends here in the U.S.A.) and the end of the earth (East Africa and ???) Pray for God's clear direction and provision.

Six days ago I traveled with Samuel, Mary's brother through the beautiful green rice lands between Nairobi and Kirinyaga. We passed tea fields being harvested by workers in colorful clothing with large wicker baskets on their backs. There was tar mac on the road which was mud a few years ago so travel in the rain was possible. We stopped for lunch and enjoyed roasted goat meat and ugali...so yummy. Mary, Alex, Elizabeth and happy baby Isaac greeted us in there new home next to Defather's Anglican Church. And of course, there were hugs of greetings and food.

Sunday Morning was glorious after a long night of rain. The air was fresh and clean, the mud was red and sticky, the sky was bright blue, tropical trees glistened with rain drops. The youth attended the early service where I was asked to preach in English. The young people have many challenges here, as do young people back at home and Jesus has the answer to all of the challenges. After a quick break and the traditional greetings and prayers around the table, the second service began.

Mary led the lively service, the choir sang, the people danced and praised the Lord. When it was time to give our offerings, there was a watermelon and a chicken along with Kenya shillings. The chicken was auctioned to one of the church leaders who donated it to me. Alex dispatched it, plucked it and cleaned it, then Mary cooked it and we all enjoyed that delicious fresh chicken for dinner. God is good, and so are his chickens.
This Week in Kirinyaga!

The author of multiple books about the Bible was in Kirinyaga at the request of Bishop Joseph. Rev. Peter Walker and his lovely wife Georgie blessed the clergy and evangelists with their presence. Peter taught about the truth of the gospel, reminding us that Jesus is ALIVE!!! He is real, he is with us and we can call on him in the joys, sorrows and even in the doldrums of life. There was a holy hush as we called on the Holy Spirit to enliven us, heal us and empower us to continue on with the commandment given by Jesus, "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

On Tuesday the bishop took a small team on a walk through the Holy Land of Kenya where he has created a dynamic way of teaching people of all ages about Christ's birth, life, death, resurrection and post-resurrection appearances. Green and beautiful with indigenous trees of all sorts, the red clay path leads visitors from Bethlehem to Jerusalem and on to Galilee. There are signs to guide pilgrims and tours guides who tell the great gospel story that has changed the world. The bishop honored the team members with the wonderful privilege of planting a tree in the Holy Land.

On Wednesday after another blessed day of teaching from both Peter Walker and Jenny Noise, the bishop again blessed the team with tree planting, this time at Safari Biblia. A great expanse of land with a new amphitheater and chapel, this Eden-like spot brings the whole Bible to life. From Creation to Revelations, there are stopping points along the way where the guide walks visitors through the whole salvation history. The team visited with our friends Anthony and Jane for a delicious dinner and fun fellowship. Their chickens are growing week by week, I wonder if they are excited or afraid to travel to Nairobi when they are a mere six weeks old. Do they know that they will soon be chicken stew?

On Thursday, Rev. Banci took me with her to visit a local church where the Mother's Union was meeting. After a tour of the constructions sight and the large worship space, we returned to the meeting where arrowroot and sweet potatoes were served. The ladies were kind and gracious as they greeted the interruption with joy. Banci proceeded through mud-slick roads to on home visits in her area. In each home, family members and friends greeted us warmly as they showed us around their neat, tidy gardens and lovely homes. We prayed, drank more tea, ate great food and visited with Christians who opened their hearts and homes to strangers-just like Jesus taught us to do.

Back at the Theological college, we again had a delicious meal together with Peter, Georgie, Mary, Alex, other clergy and the bishop. Fish pie was a new taste sensation for me, apparently it is a popular dish in England. There were lots of laughs, gifts exchanged with thanksgivings and invitations to return. Then six of us proceeded up the hills to the foot of Mt. Kenya where Isaac, Grace's husband greeted us with our tenth meal of the day. Wow, there has been a great deal of construction going on since I visited last. They are building a guest house for people to stay and enjoy the comfort of being in peace in the shadow of the mountain. Traveling back down the hills to Mary and Alex's house, we said good-bye to Peter and Georgie as they continue with their own Adventures with the Lord.

For those of you who pray, these are things I'm talking to Jesus about day by day. Please join in the choir of prayer. Ask Jesus what he has for me today (and for you as well). I pray for wisdom and guidance as I teach and preach (on Sunday), as God brings people for prayer and fellowship.
I pray for healing for many people, some of whom I will not mention here but God knows. For Nancy, David, Rachelle, Banci's friend, Greta's arm to continue healing, Susan L., Elizabeth, Patrick's knee, Deanne, Gary, Donna, Sandi and Jerry. Thank God for my own good health, really, praise God!!, for healing Isaac, Isaac, and little Abraham.

Thanks for your ongoing support. Hope you are enjoying this adventure. Please leave a comment if you have time.
Blessings,
It is Thursday evening in Nairobi. John, Sarah, Abraham, Isaac and I have eaten a delicious meal of rolls, mushroom main dish and lentil side dish. It was fresh, colorful and yummy. Believe it or not, we are watching CNN, listening to the state of America a year after President Trump won the election. I cannot really hear what they are saying but they look angry. John is laughing. Sarah has gone out to find some friends.
Now Deborah and Mary have returned with Sarah carrying a large, heavy charcoal stove up 4 flights of steps, they are gasping for breath. John and I spent long hours today talking, dreaming and planning for another mission trip. This one, in 2018. Lynn Bouters, SAMS director of short-term missions and Bridgers, will lead a small multi-cultural team to work with John and others in a South Sudanese refugee camp in northern Uganda. Some will also proceed to Juba, South Sudan. God willing, we will work with the local pastors and church leaders to examine the Bible and learn to better live out what we find the words and stories. There will be times of worship, prayer, listening to the stories of the people and learning together. Pray with us for the Lord of the harvest to send workers, provision, wisdom and joy as we move forward with John.

This morning, Friday, we are waking to gentle rain refreshing the land. The sounds are of home in West Virginia as the rain bounces off the tin roof. Today I pray that God will prepare me and give me the words He has for the youth and adults who attend 2 services at Good Samaritan Church on Sunday. I look forward to meeting the Dinka ladies, baking bread together and praying to the Lord of the harvest.

Friends at home are on my mind so I lift them to you Father. Please heal those who are sick. Remove cancer cells, restore broken bones, remove addictions, heal backs and Lord please move in the hearts and minds of your children around the world. Bring stability and peace in lands where war has for too long been a way of life. Lord, you called Abraham to be a blessing to all nations. Help us to follow that call as we live into Christ's call to go into the world making disciples. Fill the world with your peace-filled disciples Lord. AMEN.

Tomorrow I will pack a few things I have here in our cabin in West Virginia where friends in the small town will be praying for friends in Kenya whom they have never met. Later, Chuck and I will go back to Pittsburgh where we will have a cousin's sleepover at Nathaniel's house. I will continue packing a few more items, books, notebooks, Bibles, gifts for friends, malaria medication, passport, visa, toothbrush and camera.

Friday and Saturday will hold joy-filled surprises at the diocesan convention. It is always fun to greet old and new friends, hear stories of God's work in our churches, in neighborhoods and beyond, out into the world. I look forward to the challenges of workshops on discipleship since making disciples is the job of a missionary Bridger. There will also be more time with our grand kids.

Sunday will be full of more joy as we attend church with our friends at Mosaic. Our official sending church will have baptisms this week, joy, joy and more joy! Then a bit more time to spend with family and friends, complete the packing process and consider how God will use me and others to spread His good gospel.

As always, I feel completely inadequate and unprepared as the preparations continue. AND I feel overjoyed, and thrilled to have the great opportunity to go again to work with friends in Kenya. Each time I am called, each time God provides through family and friends like you. Each time I am upheld in the cloud of the Lord's presence because of your faithful prayers. Each mission is different, I do not know what to expect but I know for sure that the Lord is faithful and is already preparing the way for the things He has called me to do together the friends in Kenya.

If you pray, please pray for good health in these last few days of preparation and throughout the mission. Pray for Chuck and our family who remain at home. For Chuck this is the first time he will be alone while I am away so that will be a big change for him. Pray for hosts John, Mary, Bancy and Winnie who will be guiding and directing our work together. Pray for the safety of the Kenyan people as they sort through the elections without violence. Pray for the Sunday School teachers, pastors, evangelist, lay people, the children and their beloved bishop in the diocese of Kirinyaga.

In the mean time..... Looking Forward....My Dear Friends and Mission Supporters,

Thank you for your ongoing prayers, thoughts and support. Without you, this work is not possible.
It is nearly the end of July and four months since I have returned home from Kenya and Uganda.
I am writing today because, at length, there is a conclusion about what's next. Please do not stop praying for me, our family, our new season in Belington, W.Va. and for future missions at home and in far away places.

First, In Conclusion....
The mission in Kenya with Archdeacon Mary and Rev. Simon was full of surprises. The most common surprise to me was the way God guided and directed each step. The schedule was full of visitations, preaching opportunities, teaching Sunday School teachers and meeting the people in Kirinyaga Diocese.

Bishop Joseph is a kind host who personally took me to his land where he is creating a beautiful park for people of all ages to walk though the great Gospel stories and reflect on the impact of that long-ago trail. I was particularly impressed by the Bishop's teaching about the cross and Christ's resurrection. Jesus is alive and well and moving powerfully in that Diocese under Bishop Joseph's Godly leadership.
Mary and her wonderful husband, Alex, are generous, patient and loving hosts. I miss them! We laughed together and prayed together. They took me in as one of their own and exemplified to me the brotherly love that was so attractive to new converts in the first century. Pray with me for them as they are soon to welcome a new baby into the family. Life will surely change and they are the best kind of parents!

Rev. Simon is an incredibly gifted young man. He shines Jesus' love. Simon escorted me to most of the 7 teacher conferences. We taught together, as a team. He interpreted (and corrected when needed) my words as we joyfully encouraged the Sunday school teachers throughout the diocese. He has now been appointed to lead a multi-diocese task force that writes simple, usable lesson plans for the teachers. They have a strategic plan for helping the teachers to become more effective as they share the gospel with the thousands of children who are being touched by God's word.

This mission was an important picture for me of the connections we all have in Christ. You who pray and support through encouraging words and financial support are just as present to me as those with whom I am working face to face. We, together, are part of the embassy of the Lord's Kingdom here on earth, we are His ambassadors. As one prays and gives, another writes, another goes, another welcomes home, we all work together for His good.

And a special thanks to Mosaic, my sending church. Thank you Rev. Elaine Storm and all those who so faithfully pray and give. Thank you for your encouragement and for hearing my stories when I return. Thank you for caring about the people in far-away places and for those in Imperial who do not yet know Christ. Thank you for being willing to make sacrifices in order that others may come to know Jesus. Thank you for being my home when I am in this part of the world.

In the mean time.....
My head and heart are spinning. When I arrived home on Good Friday, Emily, Karl, Cambria, Greta, and Dietrich were already preparing to move to Sewickley. They have lived with us for at least 4 years and I love having them here with us. I am so very excited for them in their new home. They have returned to the neighborhood where we lived until Emily was 10 years old. They can walk to school, to the shops, the park, to church and to the YMCA. They are happy and active in their new place.

At the end of May, Nathaniel bought a house in Baden which is down the river from Emily. He packed his clothing and a few items in boxes and off he went to begin a new adventure of his own. As an auto mechanic, he will continue in the same place he has been working since he was in college. He is a good helper for Chuck as they work to build our new home.

In a few days Abby will move to Mt. Washington as she too begins a new season. She continues to work as a nurse in a place where challenges are at every turn.

Soon Erin and Austin (now nearly 3 years old) will move to a new home in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Erin works as a nurse in Pittsburgh as well and continues to be a blessing to many families who come to the hospital with great fear.

In 12 weeks Chuck will retire after 35 years as a police officer with Moon Township. For 2 1/2 years he has been working hard to build a home for us on the shore of the Tygert Valley River in Belington, W.Va.

As you see, WE ARE IN TRANSITION!!! My head and heart are spinning. There are days when I just simply do not know were to begin, I don't have Greta and Dietrich jumping on my face and singing "Shake it Off". I'm living in three worlds. One in Oakdale where we are working to get our house ready to sell after being here for 23 years. One in Belington where we do not yet have plumbing and struggle to get the hot water to work in the outdoor cow trough bath tub. One in Africa where I long to be again.

Looking Forward.....
In Africa
As you may know, Bishop Joseph invited me and a SAMS team to lead a missions conference in November. The date was then changed to December. It is an incredible honor to have been invited to work side-by-side with such dedicated brothers and sisters in Christ. I was excited to return to do so. But is now seems that the timing is not right. For personal reasons which I will explain and because we were not able to gather a team, I have written to request that a team could come in 2017. Lynn Bouterse, the director of short-term missions and I will work together to prayerfully consider this mission. It is my prayer that another opportunity for mission will present itself so that we can walk together with our friends in Kenya. I am also praying with confidence that God is providing the right people to lead the mission already scheduled in December. There may be other opportunities in Uganda, Ethiopia, and Sudan as well so I pray for clarity of vision and for wisdom as I listen to God's direction.

In Belington

Our new bishop, Jim Hobby, is excited to hear more about what God is doing in Belington. He is open to finding ways to form partnerships in ministry and to think together about the best ways to walk into the vision God has given. Years ago, God showed me a place with a house where people gather to pray, to eat, to worship and learn together. There were small cottages and small gardens and people coming and going, people of all ages from all over the world. We were connected by friendship and for our love of the Lord. It was a place of peace and prayer.
As you see from the Mean Time report, I believe that this 23 acres of land on the river is a place God can use to bring people together for a time and then send them back out into the world. Building a house in a place where there is no electric, no sewer system, no gas, no paved road and very little access to reliable helpers is not easy!!! It is hard. There are days when I question whether or not God is the one who gave that vision, if the vision was for us, if the vision is for this place, for now for .....
I question. And I know that walking obediently with God is not easy, but it is good and right. I know that I may not see the fruit of this obedience until we arrive in heaven. Right now it feels like there may not be fruit. UG.
Belington is a beautiful place. I meet people who are sad, some who are stuck, some who are angry, some who are encouraging, faithful, and full of hope. It is a mixed bag just as those first missionaries found and the thousands of faithful missionaries throughout history.
When God gives us marching orders He rarely gives a detailed description as He did when He gave directions for the building of the tabernacle. I would love those kinds of directions!!! But most often He says, "Follow me, trust me, walk with me day by day and I will show you the way." UG. I want a road map, not a note with the next step scribbles on a napkin. But, when God hands you a napkin it is best to trust those directions and wait for the next marching order.
Please pray for continued clarity of vision, for His provision, for help to complete the house and most importantly for God to show us people of peace in the place with whom we can partner as we share the gospel.

In Oakdale....
Sad to leave. Packing is hard. Organizing 23 years of stuff and not having a place to put my books is hard. We have contacted a Realtor, waiting to hear from him. We will move some things to Nathaniel's house where we will keep a bedroom as a local resting place when we come home. I hope to have a big party before we say good-bye to thank those very many people who have made our house home over the years.
When we first moved here people came to help Chuck tear down a room and build an addition. We celebrated Thanksgiving in this house before the walls were finished, such great memories.
People came to paint and scrape paint, to scrub and just to hang out with us
People came to partner with us to plant the Garden Gate which began officially a week before Ivan hit. And then came a flood of people helping to clean up and work through the mud as we ministered to those is great need.
People came for bible studies, missions planning, youth group, and just to say hello.
When we were looking for a home, we asked God to give us a home that would be a blessing to us, our family and friend for years to come. He answered those prayers in a thousand ways.
And now we pray that God will bring the right people to take over the care of this home that will be a blessing to them for years to come.

Years ago, Eric Taylor reminded us almost daily that change is hard. I always considered myself one of the early adapters, the one who goes out ahead to lead to way to change. And today I feel like the one who is hanging on for dear life. The future us unknown, I have no control, it is not easy, but it is good and right. I will follow Him where He leads. I know you will too.

I love you and look forward to the continued Adventure...
I know it has been three weeks since my arrival because I took my third dose of malaria medication. Speaking of mosquitoes, they were having a family reunion a few nights ago and I was on the menu! Two nights ago we were having a downpour (which is considered a great blessing here) and I asked if I could open my window thinking that the bugs would not be flying around in such a storm. Alex responded in his wonderfully humorous voice, "No, the grandparents will be coming!"
There have been some internet challenges, I think my yahoo account has been hacked-again! Not sure what to do about it. But other than that small inconvenience, all is going very well. All 7 of the Sunday School Conferences have been completed and Simon tells me that close to 250 total teachers have attended. They were all welcoming, generous, kind and showed interest in the teaching because they really want to do a better job of teaching the children.
Yesterday I spoke at the clergy gathering, reminding us all that Jesus gives us truth and that we should never believe the lies of the enemy. Jesus tells us that the truth is given to us in scripture and that because of the words given by Moses, we should recognize Jesus as Lord and savior. Trusting Him is the only way to live in His kingdom here on earth and into eternity.
Since traveling to Mary's home on Monday it has been one exciting event after another. On Wednesday at the first Sunday School teachers' conference we were greeted by 100 people. This was a blessing, knowing that so many people from a few perishes in the diocese were willing to travel to the church, participate in training and are excited to continue teaching many hundreds of children in their home churches. What a joy to see them dancing and singing and enjoying one another.

We drove through the fields in order to visit a fellow clergy member who had taken ill. I was expecting to go quietly into the home, lean over the bed, lay hands on the patient and leave after encouraging the family. BUT NO!! All of the clergy arrived, the ill clergy friend was up out of bed and greeting us at the gate. There was a meal (of course) prayers and even a clergy meeting. There was a collection taken to help support the family and we even got a glimpse of a new grandbaby. These people really know how to care for one another.
We left the gathering and visited Alex and Mary's house in progress. It is a large creative home on a quiet plot of land. There are cows, sheep, goats, chickens and even a rabbit. The young farm helper takes good care of the animals and the crops. While meeting Alex's sister-in-law I was served fermented porridge which sounds yukky but was actually quite tasty.

We slept well and late on Monday. we did some washing out of clothes and rested. We even went to Mary's former church village and ordered a dress and skirt to be made. I can't wait to see them.

That night Mary and I cooked mashed potatoes, goat stew and gravy and had ice cream for dessert. It was a semi-American meal and the first time I had cooked goat meat.

Today was the third of seven teacher conferences. there were 85 Sunday School teachers present. We talked about looking around and using what God has already given. We learned about the learning square and taking baby steps to reach the larger goal. We talked about debriefing and reviewing our work in order to better meet the needs of the children. It was a great day and they blessed my socks off with a gift of a plaque for the wall. ...and food of course.

Dear Friend, It is a great joy to let you know that I have arrived in Kenya safely. Thank you for your ongoing prayers. As planned, I arrived in Nairobi on Friday, Feb. 19th in the evening. After a few hours in the airport, the driver met me and took me to the Anglican Guest house in Nairobi.

On Saturday I rested and recovered from jet lag. Sunday I walked to the All Saints Cathedral where we worshiped the Lord and heard a helpful sermon about fasting and prayer.
Taking the wrong way back up the hill gave me a good view of the city and stretched my legs. That afternoon I had a lovely visit from Miriam before dinner and more rest.

Monday was a day of seeing Mary and her 'king', Alex. The road to Kirinyaga was smooth as we passed tea fields, towns with open air fruit markets, donkeys carrying heavy loads and smiling faces of the children. We could see the outline of Mt. Kenya as we drove along the way.
Tuesday I visited the Bishop who explained part of his plan for the children of the diocese. I walked with Simon along the Walk of the Bible path and even had my hair braided.

Today was our first children's conference. Over 100 Sunday School teachers attended. Their warm welcome was a great encouragement. It helps me to imagine the Sunday School teachers in Pittsburgh diocese gathering together for training, mutual support and strategic planning. There are helpful materials and good support for the teachers who are impacting for Jesus 1000 children just in that archdeaconary (21 parishes, on of 7 archdeaconaries in the diocese) !!!!! God is at work in Kenya.
The check-list of final preparations is .... where did I put that check list? OK, so today I'm making the final check-list and will be extraordinarily pleased to CHECK off most of the items on the list.

For instance, yesterday I had the joy of worshiping at Mosaic, my sending church, where they prayed for the mission and promised to continue praying now, during and following the time in Africa. They are a faithful group of prayer warriors whose prayers are essential. Please join them.
In case you might be wondering what else is done prior to leaving...
a solar system, propane back-up heaters, propane appliances, septic system, a larger generator for back-up electric, building another structure for a proper bathroom and laundry and planning for a garden in hopes that we can find some common ground (no pun intended) with our neighbors. All this without a contractor, architect, plumber, electrician or farmer. And trying to deal with the fact that our taxes were raised beyond what we believe is a reasonable amount.
Just a few distractions to employ my brain while preparing for the other mission at hand. Kenya and Uganda.
Focus, Focus, Focus!!!!!

Next week will be my last pre-mission post, After that, notes from the field.
debsmissionaryadventureshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07093755498282029838noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5631362778754946979.post-63841745184040216622016-01-28T13:22:00.000-08:002016-01-28T13:22:49.531-08:00Three weeks and counting...A leader announces, "God is good" and the people respond "all the time". The leader continues, "All the time" and the response comes, "God is good". You have probably heard this joyful pronouncement here in Pittsburgh and other places in the U.S. but did you know that in Uganda and Kenya people express their trust in the goodness of God in the same way? In fact I think this expression may have originated with the East African Revival, correct me if I'm wrong.
This is one of the many connections found with friends on the other side of the world. Being part of the world-wide Anglican communion provides a sense of confidence that the Bible is understood to be the trustworthy, relevant word of God, that Jesus is the incarnate son of the father who came to earth, lived, died and rose so that all people everywhere can be restored to the father. We agree that the Holy Spirit is alive and living in the hearts and minds of all who trust in the Lord.
In three more weeks I will be getting on the plane and traveling to Nairobi where I will spend a few days recovering from jet lag and adapting to the culture such as looking in the opposite direction when crossing the street.
Since my first short-term mission trip in 1994, I have found that in these last few weeks of preparing for far-away service in the Lord's army, there are increased conflicts, challenges and reasons to stay home. This year is no exception which is why your on-going prayers are essential, beginning NOW.
Confidence in God's call to the mission field keeps me focused and moving forward but there are loads of distractions and concerns as the time for leaving draws near.
Pray for my old and scarred body to work the way it is meant to work, for good sleep and loads of energy in the days.
When talking to my friend Elaine today I explained my excitement and enthusiasm for the upcoming mission in Kenya and Uganda. I was unable to travel to Kenya last year when Suzanne followed through with our plans to lead a conference for the Sunday School teachers of the diocese. This year, the Lord has made a way for me to return to Kenya; working with the Sunday School teachers will be a great joy. My good friends Canon Mary and Rev. Simon have planned for us to go out into each of the 7 archdeaconries of their diocese. I am especially excited to GO into the fields working with smaller groups of teachers. Here is a small group of ladies who attended the ordination of their pastor in Northern Kenya in 2011. It is hard to imagine that it has been five years since my first introduction to Kenya. In September of 2011 the northern most village of Sololo was my home for four weeks. Below is a photo taken on my front porch. I will never forget the humble hearts of the teachers and parishioners led by Rev. Qampicha, a former Trinity student. I look forward to meeting old friends and making new friends in this beautiful country.
I remember Archbishop Stanley of Uganda preaching in Pittsburgh years ago saying that we are to be like the colt that carried Jesus into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. The colt was available, ready to serve, humble and willing to carry the message of God's love. He reminded us that we are to bring attention to the one with the good news, Jesus. This donkey calmly, persistently, daily carries the heavy burden of the family's water from a water source miles from home. Every morning many of these faithful donkeys serve their families by bringing life sustaining water. I pray that I will be like that donkey bringing life sustaining good news of Jesus to the teachers who so lovingly carry that life giving news to the children.
I am thankful for time on the mission field in Belize sharing fun and laughs with five faithful team members. A year and a half later one young priest is with his family in the northern part of Canada teaching in a theological college. One young many has gone ahead of us to be with the Lord in his heavenly home. And his family member has become a donor for this mission to Kenya. Blessings abound and my gratitude expands. The three young girls in Belize are now in college. Two in California and one in Ohio making plans for a college mission trip to Nicaragua. God is on the move, He is calling His faithful followers to share the gospel to the nations. Our small group of six is just one example of God's provision for those He calls to go...

On Nov.26, 2015 in the U.S. we celebrate God's goodness with joy and thanksgiving. Many things are changing in this season of life. Since my last post I have had surgery and have been released by the surgeon to travel internationally.

In West Virginia we assisted in a VBS partnership. The Rock in Oakdale traveled to Calvary Baptist with the Marketplace journey. Adults, teens and children learned about Christ's love while having loads of fun and experiencing answers to prayers daily.

A few weeks ago friends from The Rock, Mosaic, and Calvary joined us as we walked the boundaries of our property. We prayed for God's blessings on the land as we placed markers to remember God's promises. We pray for continued wisdom as we meet the neighbors and find ways to share Christ in ways that are meaningful. Cabin construction continues as we attempt to create systems for plumbing, power and heat. It is under roof, most of the walls and ceiling are insulated but the floor and doors are leaking cold air so we still have lots of work to do before Chuck retires next October.

Having missed the mission to Kenya and Ethiopia in April of 2015, Canon Mary has invited me to join her in Kenya to encourage and teach the children's ministry leaders. From Feb. 20, 2016 through March 12 please pray for beautiful feet as we go throughout the diocese meeting these faithful leaders.

SAMS has asked me to go with a young missionary on her initial visit to Uganda as we pray for God's guidance. We plan to visit multiple sights as she investigates children ministry opportunities. This visit is being planned for March 13 through 24.

Returning the last week of March will give me a few days to rest before attending a SAMS missionary retreat and New Wineskins missions conference in Ashville, North Carolina. I also continue to work on an D.Min. final project with an improbable graduation date of May 2016. It is more likely that 2017 will bring it to completion.

Please pray with us for these many opportunities to serve the Lord. Your prayers surely sustain us as we move forward in this season of transition. We give thanks for you today and we join with our family to celebrate God's good blessings to us, to you and to all of His children.
Things do not always go the way we think they will, even when we are listening and obeying the Lord.

Beginning in the fall of 2014, Suzanne and I had been meeting bi-weekly planning and preparing for the Sunday School Teachers Conference in Kenya followed by training for the Mother's Union in Ethiopia. Thanks to faithful prayer warriors and generous donations toward this mission, we were well-prepared and looking forward to our time in Africa.

As we approached the last two weeks of preparations, my body began to give signs that all was not well. Many of you know that I was unable to lead a mission to Belize two years ago because of a bout of diverticulitis which turned into C-Diff. Now, I was having similar symptoms so on March 18, I went to the E.R. where there were somewhat inconclusive test results. I was relieved that it was not diverticulitis (though the pain continued). After another appointment with my PC, I felt confident that all was going to be fine for the mission.

Then, early in the morning of Palm Sunday there was extreme pain. Abby drove me back to the E.R. where they diagnosed diverticulitis and admitted me for 4 days. I was told that because of repeated bouts in the same area, surgery was a good option and there was no way I could leave the country.
AGAIN????

After saying good-bye to Suzanne who bravely headed off to Africa on her own, on April 9 I headed to the Dr. office for another test. My body was too inflamed to complete the test so I would wait another month before a repeat of the test and an answer about possible surgery. More and more waiting.... The test will happen again on May 6th, this time I am hopeful that results will show that I am completely healed and no surgery is needed. Please pray with me for God's healing touch.

It has taken me six weeks to write about this. Partly because I was very weak for a long time but more so because I knew I needed to get a grip. I needed to grip His goodness in all of this. It is taking time to consider how He is working this for the good but because I know that He has given that promise, I know that He is doing it.

I am learning that it doesn't really matter so much if it is an attack of the enemy or God's hand at work in the events. It doesn't really matter because either way, God is in control and I can be at peace knowing this is true.

I am learning that laying in bed is a great place to pray. Being out of the busyness of the mission, I was able to focus daily on specific prayers for Suzanne and the people she went to serve. During this time we have heard of Ethiopian Christians being martyred along with other atrocities conducted by ISIS. We have seen chaos breaking out in our own country, in Baltimore, New York and Philadelphia. Follow clergy have lost family members, friends are sick and dying, turmoil abounds. I have had time to listen to God's word (on my large phone), to communicate with friends around the world (on my large phone) and to pray continually (not on my large phone).

Even laying in the hospital was a blessing. John MacDonald was so kind to bring for a visit Bishop Rob and Mama Sue (just a few days before we all heard the sad news of students being killed in his Northern Kenya Diocese). I have had time to relax on the beautiful river in West Virginia, visit someone who is grieving, attend gardening meetings in Belington, meet a new friend in the Laundromat, cheer for Chuck's great work on the cottage, play with grandbabies and do some reading.

Suzanne is returning home as this is being written. I look forward to hearing all the good news of the mission. She has posted many videos and photos on facebook but hearing it from her face-to-face will be a great joy. I will report to you when more is known.

Most importantly, despite missing the mission, despite looking surgery in the face, despite not knowing how my summer will proceed or when I will return to Africa ...., I am at peace because I know that He knows and He works all these things together for HIS good.

Thank you all for your on-going prayers for me and with me.

It is my hope that I can return to Africa within the next few months but I do not yet know.
I will keep you posted at it is revealed in His good timing.
What a great visual picture of our anticipation of the light of Christ bursting out of the grave on Easter. And as we wait with anticipation, we prepare our hearts and minds for the reality of His love for us.

It is February 24, in exactly six weeks Suzanne and I will be stepping off the plane in Nairobi. There have been many blessings as we plan and prepare. Communicating with Cannon Mary, now Mrs. Cannon Mary, and Rev. Simon has been an incredible blessing. We are moving forward with the schedule planning for the 5 day teachers' conference which will begin on April 13. There has also been communications with Bishop Grant and Dr. Wendy in Ethiopia where we will teach in the last week of April. I am looking forward to meeting all the wonderful brothers and sisters in both places as we learn together more about God's kingdom and how to teach the children.

Praise Reports... I have completed my 4 doses of Typhoid medication. My body is relatively healthy. My Doctor of Ministry proposal was accepted and approved. The first draft of the conference schedule is complete and sent off for changes. Most of my funds have been donated!!! The flights and insurance have been purchased. Lots of folks are helping with the supply of felt for Ethiopia. Bishop Duncan has assigned me to be the 'pastor to Barbour County, W. Va.' Our grandchildren are happy and growing too quickly.

Prayer Requests.... Pray for protection for my family. For encouragement and provision for Suzanne as she raises funds for the mission. For protection of the many folks in Gambela who are displaced and finding a new home. For Cannon Mary and her new husband as they adjust to married life. For my sending church, Mosaic as they continue to find new ways of meeting their neighbors. For Chuck and I as we also find new ways of meeting and knowing our new neighbors in Belington W. Va. For Bishop George of Masindi, Uganda as he completes his visit here in Pittsburgh and other locations here in the US before returning home. For Bonnie, Caroline and Jack as they grieve for the loss of Bruce. May they grieve with hope and anticipation.

I am thankful to God for all of you. Enjoy your time of anticipation.
We will join them to discover helpful ways to teach the children in this area of the world. Many displaced people are gathering in this place, warring tribespeople are joining together to worship and serve the Lord. They are an amazing example of restoration and reconciliation. Forgiveness and grace reign, and the Lord's power overthrows the attempts of the great enemy. And God wins!!
When our time in Kenya is complete, we will go to be with Dr. Wendy and Bishop Grant.
What a great joy to be invited to join in the great work that has been going on in this part of the world.

Study and experience has convinced me that missionaries are entering into a season of rediscovering how to best serve the nations. As missionaries from all parts of the world go to places far and near, we are learning how to become inter-dependent. In Kenya, we will encourage Sunday School teachers to use affordable local materials to create teaching tools for their students. Expensive curriculum imported from the west has been donated in some locations however many teachers have no books or lesson plans. We want to discover how to use what is available to teach the children and make disciples of the next generation.
How we got here:

Two years ago, three East African Trinity School for Ministry (TSM) students met with a few mission-minded folks from Pittsburgh to talk about a vision for encouraging Sunday School teachers in their home dioceses. A preliminary plan was created that painted a picture of teachers participating in a five day conference where they would worship, study God's word, pray, learn about teaching methods and learning styles.

In January of 2014, God brought to fruition the pilot programs of three dioceses in Uganda. In partnership with Community Bible Study International, over 200 teachers were trained and encouraged. Suzanne Trenney and I were part of the team who had the privilege of participating in this ground-breaking work.
What we are doing:
In August of 2014, the CBSI training was expanded to the diocese of Kirinyogo, Kenya as TSM graduate Rev. Canon Mary Murage leads the way in training teachers in her home. Having been part of the training in Uganda, Mary sees a need for follow-up. She has invited Suzanne and I to return to East Africa for a five day teacher's conference in Kirinyogo.

In April, we will travel to Kenya and prepare for the conference with Rev. Mary and others. The teachers will join us for five days.

Praying:
Please join us in prayer for clarity, wisdom, good communication and for God's provision for all that is needed. Pray for the teachers and the children in Kenya who are excited to be better prepared to share the good gospel story in the Bible. Pray for continued good health for each of us as we prepare, as we go and as we return. Pray for protection. Pray for our families.

Planning:
Suzanne and I will be meeting twice a month to plan and prepare for the mission. This means creating an itinerary for the 24 day mission. By working with Rev. Mary to get input from the teachers in advance we will be better able to assure that the conference will meet their needs. We will create a schedule for the conference that includes their own local people as speakers and leaders. There are talks to give, hands-on learning tools to create, and many details to consider. We are also hoping to have time for meeting with friends in Uganda and possibly in Ethiopia.

Preparing:
As we continue planning, we are also preparing in mind, body and spirit. Preparing requires support. Support requires prayer and funding.
The budget for 24 days includes air-fare, local transportation, housing, food, materials needed to teach during the conference, a donation to help to off-set the cost of the conference, visas, shots, and malaria medication. The total projected budget is $4825.00 per person. The generous support of friends and family sustain us as we partner together in this important ministry.

Updates:
This blog is being created to let folks know what is being planned, also to raise needed funds so we are able to go. Most importantly, it will be used to keep folks updated as we proceed with the mission. This will be a place where folks can go to know how to pray and to learn what God is doing through the mission partnership. I am confident that this will be a tool to help us all to stay connected.
